Movie, discussion on women & media is March 12

The Rochester Media Association in partnership with The Rochester Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America; Rochester Women’s Network; Women’s Council, affiliate of the Rochester Business Alliance; and Dress for Success Rochester will present a screening of the critically-acclaimed independent film Miss Representation 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday March 12 at The Little Theatre, 240 East Ave.

misrep_poster_JPGWritten and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. This local event is also being held in honor of Women’s History Month and in recognition of the need for continuing conversations to inspire and engage women to take on influential roles in their community.

After the screening, attendees are invited to join a panel discussion in the theater with local media leaders including:

  • Sandy Waters, morning host 98.9 The Buzz.
  • Maureen McGuire, WROC News 8 Anchor.
  • Barbara Pierce, president, Tipping Point Communications.
  • Juanita Washington, editor-in-chief, BreakThru Magazine.

The event schedule is:

  • 6:00-6:30 p.m.: Networking and registration in The Little’s main lobby and cafe
  • 6:45 p.m.: Miss Representation film begins in Theater 5.
  • 8:15-8:50 p.m.: Local panel discussion immediately following film

Tickets must be purchased online in advance through the PRSA website. The cost is $7 for members of PRSA, Rochester Media Association, Rochester Women’s Network, and Women’s Council. Admission is $10 for all others.

    The Rochester Media Association was formed in 2011 to build a community of professionals from a wide range of local media organizations through social activities and networking, professional development, and recognition.

    It became a membership organization in early 2013, with annual dues of $25.

    Dues-paying members get discounts for events (including the annual recognition banquet), along with an opportunity to participate in selection of the Association's major honors: the Impact Awards presented at the awards banquet.
